TobyMac’s PORTABLE SOUNDS at #10 on Billboard Top 200
TobyMac registered the highest single artist, non-compilation album debut in the United States this week with PORTABLE SOUNDS, entering the Billboard Top 200 chart at #10 up in the mix near Justin Timberlake and Corinne Bailey Rae among others. The set also bowed at #1 on the Christian album chart.
USA Today noted the "ecclesiastical eclecticism" of PORTABLE SOUNDS, encouraging readers to "download the soulful, prayerful ‘Lose My Soul' featuring Kirk Franklin and Mandisa." Campus Circle wrote, "Like the deeply religious Matisyahu, TobyMac infuses his spirituality into popular music very smoothly . . . he can cook in many genres." Grand Rapids Press declares "listenable is the operative word for this artist who has shown a compelling creativity that continues to find new fans."
In all, PORTABLE SOUNDS sold 50,645 copies its first week out, the best debut yet among TobyMac's solo efforts that include the gold certified MOMENTUM and WELCOME TO DIVERSE CITY. The hip-hop, pop, rock, and reggae flavored project is led by first single "Made to Love" which is currently at #1 on the Christian contemporary hit radio chart and in the Top 5 on the all-genre Billboard Hot Singles chart.
Responding to the strong reception, TobyMac said, "For me, PORTABLE SOUNDS was a labor of love, the rest is a great plan and a passionate team coming together and rockin' it. It's always an honor to know that people connect with your music."
Fans can keep the connection strong by catching the 19-city Portable Sounds Tour that begins March 15. Check out all the new album and concert details at tobymac.com and myspace.com/tobymac.
