Steven Curtis Chapman

House fire at the Chapmans. Fire extinguishers save home from serious damage.

At around 5am on July 5th the smoke detectors at the home of Steven Curtis Chapman rang the alarm and awoke the Chapman family. Steven was at home with wife Mary Beth and his three youngest daughters and jumped out of bed (barefoot) to try to locate the smoke and fire.

To his utter horror, Steven found the trash cans adjacent to the back corner of their home on fire and flames involving the family's home office. "I've never been in more of a panic in my life," Steven said last night in front of the boarded up broken windows. "Fire extinguishers saved the day, Jim, anybody that calls and wants to do a campaign for fire extinguishers, I'm there."

Two fire extinguishers the Chapmans had on hand and quick thinking by Steven and Mary Beth were the difference between a one room loss and minor smoke damage throughout the home... and something much, much more serious. The firemen on scene agreed, without those extinguishers the fire certainly would have spread quickly to other floors and the main part of the house before they could have arrived to the Chapman home, located a bit outside Franklin, TN.

The Chapmans are feeling so fortunate. All escaped the home safely, with Steven sustaining minor burns to his hands and feet from fighting the fire, prior to the fire department arriving on scene. And in this case, unlike the last time, thankfully insurance should cover all the damages. Many reading this blog would know that about 6 months after their youngest daughter Emily was born the Chapmans had an apartment fire completely destroy almost everything they owned.

You can't stand in front of a scene like that and not notice things like... how close the fire was to the propane grill tank, how close the fire was to the garage and the family cars. Further pondering... the SCC.com News Guru bought an additional fire extinguisher on the way home last night and checked his fire detector batteries. Would you do the same please? Other lessons learned... where are your family photos and important papers and are there copies somewhere else should anything happen to your home? Is your insurance up to date and do you have photos or video documenting your home's contents? end public service announcement here : ) Back on schedule and just what did happen last Wednesday Jim?... next blog.

Almost in tears, here. I'm not sure if it's because of the "what ifs" that could have been or the fact that I'm not sure we're up to "family fire code" around here. It could happen to anyone. *shivers*

I'm going to do a walk-thru and note where we should put some extra extinguishers. I know the only one we have right now is in the kitchen. Of course, our house is quite small, but still. You can't be too careful.

The video/photo of important things is also a great idea. I've read that before, but never took the time to do it. Our office is in dire need of an organizational revamp, as well. Thanks for the reminders, Jim.

Steven and MaryBeth, you guys are in my prayers. I know the fire is over, but I'm sure the enormity of what could have happened is heavy on your minds. Oh, and Steven, I bet you're gonna keep a pair of shoes handy from now on ;-). Shoes, gloves, fire ax.... :-)

Praise the Lord you are all safe!

In Him,

Amy

Oh wow! I am sorry to hear about the fire but I am glad that nobody got hurt. Sometimes God uses events like this to help open our eyes and to see things in a different way. Perhaps it may serve as a good reminder of how truly blessed we are and how much He has provided us with. I am glad that Steven and his family is safe and I will pray for the minor burns to heal quickly.

Wow! I'm so glad everyone is okay. I hope that Steven's burns aren't too painful & that they heal quickly. I've thought of most of the things you mentioned, Jim, & I've done some of them. I plan to do more of them this weekend now! Thanks for the "public service announcement"!

The post title totally horrified me, Jim ... praise the Lord that no one was hurt in the incident. To be reminded that such a thing has happened before with more serious consequences must be shocking. I'll be praying for the whole family as they recover from this.

Oh my!!! I feel so bad laughing as I was reading this... I remember hearing about the kitchen thing when Emily was little then Stevey Joy lit the dining room table on fire a year ago...
Thank goodness no one was seriously injured! I was burned pretty severly (2nd degree) up and down my arms when I was in grade school... long story, but, Steven, I understand!
As with the Chapmans, my family has our multiple fire stories, although none nearly that scary! Our scary stories come from flooding basements... and including an 8 month pregnant mother saving her belongings from 8 inches of sewage...

God bless!

Wow, I'm so thankful that they are all okay. I'm such a heavy sleeper, I slept through Hurrican Andrew, I'm terrified that if a house fire happened to us during the night like the Chapmans experienced, that I wouldn't wake and we would all be victims of my inability to wake up. :(

I am so grateful that the Chapmans are okay, all of them. :)

Glad to hear that you bought another extinguisher for your own family Jim. :)
