A Crashed Hard Drive, and other terrifying tales...

So, my brand new (well...not brand new, but less than a year old) Macbook has decided that it no longer wants to use the hard drive that it has been given. I'm really not very happy about this. I just got finished uploading a ton of work to it, and before I could get it over to my Time Machine, boom - it freezes. Now, after I power it on and wait for 5 minutes, my once glorious machine is now good for watching a folder with a question mark flash on and off of the screen.

Goodbye lost work. Goodbye lost photos from 4th of July weekend. Goodbye new music I have downloaded from iTunes. Goodbye my wife's school work that Time Machine decided not to back up. You all will be missed forever.

Anyone have any good crashed hard drive or technical nightmares to share?

ouch. i feel ya. got mine stolen once (i think i've posted about that before). The good news i guess is that you're one of the smarter/more fortunate ones that ACTUALLY have a back up plan, its just unfortunate that you lost the new stuff that hadn't had a chance to get on the ol' time machine. at the store, we have a saying...its not IF your hard drive will fail, its WHEN. that's weak that it failed in less than a year, however. BUT since its less than a year old, you're at least getting a new one for free. and i'd get applecare if you don't yet. for real.

all of my big technical problems have happened POST the thieving of my computer, so I've had several back up plans since then. However, before the invention of time machine, I was out on the road and my logic board was going out. I spent about 3 hours at a Genius Bar with my computer hooked up to my drummer's trying to save files for a while until my computer would freeze up, restart (trying not to move or bump my computer in any way), and move some more files.

The other was terrifying though...we MTF boys did half our album out in California, and half 2 years later in Arizona. We put all the files on two external Lacie hard drives. Well, we had some BGV's to do and so i plugged on of them in to my rig and it just clicked constantly. Who knows what happened to it, but we sure treated that 2nd backup hard drive like it was a newborn baby! No one was allowed to plug it in or turn it on, or even pick the thing up until we made another backup. we literally almost lost an entire album's worth of work. moral of that story is...next time i'm making THREE backups immediately. which is probably over kill.

Re: A Crashed Hard Drive, and other terrifying tales...

Hey Charlie - sorry to hear about the hard drive crash.

Here's my story - we had a power surge that wrecked most of my computer, at least the electrical parts.  I had a second hard drive that held all of my Cubase audio files.  However, I hadn't backed it up in a while, so many of our recordings/songs were lost.  Sending the drive out to a data recovery service was way too expensive.  However, this story does have a happy ending...

I wondered if it was just the circuit board on the hard drive was fried, but the data might be intact.  I went on ebay and found an identical hard drive for auction with the same revision circuit board as my dead one.  I bought the drive, and then swapped circuit boards.  Put the drive in a working computer, and surprise!  There was the data.  I quick backed it up to DVD and was able to recover my work.

Anyway, I don't know if something like that might work for you, but it may be worth a try.  Brian (the scientist) may be able to bring the drive back to life!

Well, other than the crashed drive, I hope you guys are doing well.  Say Hi to all from Long Island - God bless!

Just to clarify, I'm not Charlie...albiet bald and a crazy goatee, I do not yet possess the skills it takes to write hit records. Maybe one day I'll be able to give Charlie a run for his money~! Ha...right....

Update. Spoke with a MacGenius today, and I am now the proud owner of a new hard drive. Dang it!

Re: A Crashed Hard Drive, and other terrifying tales...

had that one happen to me too bro, in san diego, right after our gear got stolen. i also nearly smashed the RV we had, i did smash my fingers in the door and nearly freaked, and had a generally bad experience. but my drive was covered by applecare.

thanks for getting the info out Chris, about the release-we will continue to post more as we can. the myspace is being reworked, we are redoing the youtube channel, and the website itslef should be live and brand new very very soon!

i know we'll see everyone here (except victor, who we'll have to see in michigan) at HHBC right?

Re: A Crashed Hard Drive, and other terrifying tales...

All of these hard drive stories are making me feel much better about losing as little as I did. Thanks for cheering me up! It was fantastic that I had purchased Applecare, so I feel like I've gotten my investment back on that one.

Dustin, you know I'm here to help - and (brian...) I got your email this morning, and I'm brainstorming.

Unless you guys go crazy with ticket prices, I'll be there! I've dropped some serious cash on shows this year, and I'm trying to make some financial cut backs now so that my wife won't go hungry.
