So, it was by far the longest C-Money Hall show that I've ever seen, and I'd go out on a limb to say it's one of the longest CHB shows in the band's history. This is not in any way, shape or form a bad thing - in fact, it could have gone a full two hours and it would have been fine by me. Amazing, amazing show....I suppose I'll give the play-by-play review on this one:
Marching Band Intro - Cool introduction that was a bit thrown off by the house lights going off 4 minutes too early, but that's ok. It still sounded really, really good.
New Year - Not quite as "big" of an opener as Bravery from last years tour, but I think it will work just the same. I don't know how you feel about this, but the song you play before the Marching Band Intro might be a cool song used to play in the gap between the main set and the encore, and then to come back with the Marching Band Intro/New Year as the first encore song. It might "hit bigger" there...awesome start to the show nonetheless!
Chainbreaker - While most people had never heard this song before, it definitely went over well. This is a great song, and I'm surprised it's not making as big of a splash as it is.
Song Of The Redeemed - This has become one of those CHB staples that you just wait for to appear when you see the band live, and it works every single time. Very strong.
We Are Yours - Didn't see that one coming....;-)
My Brightness - After a few words of hello and about the album, Charlie busted into this song which kind of sets up the tone of the album. But little did we know that we would be graced by the next song that would follow.
Scenes - Man, this is definitely a show stealer. What a great song, and as I was looking around the room, I noticed that EVERYONE was into this song. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
All We Need/Clean Hands/You Are God - Neat little three song medley. Wasn't expecting it, but it was cool to kind of knock out the three "regular songs" out in about 5 minutes, leaving room for more new music. Don't get me wrong, I love the songs - but I was really looking forward to hearing the new music.
Thrill - Love it. There are a lot of clever things going on in this song, musically - I wish I had the tapes of the show so I could digest it all out again. Definitely going to be a big hit, and should be a regular in the CHB Setlist rotation.
Second Alive - I leaned over to my wife and said, "this is going to replace SOTR". It just has that energy that a CHB crowd grasps onto and doesn't want to let go, and I could tell as the guys to my right were jumping up and down through the entire song. I liked this one a lot.
Hookers & Robbers - Charlie captivated us with this song. It worked really well here too, and definitely fit in with......
Bloom Again - I hadn't heard this song since Thirsty 07, and I'm so glad you guys are bringing this one back out. Beautiful words, beautiful music, great stuff.
Turn Your Eyes/Center - Standard, but still just as powerful as it always is - but more importantly, the crowd loves this one.
Mystery - Show-stealer #2. I love this song, and I really love how it builds up into that HUGE chorus at the end. I'm sure we haven't seen the end of this song for a long, long time.
Chainbreaker (reprise) - The bridge of the song used as a momentum builder into.....
Salvation - Always a favorite, and I always anticipate the little riff you guys play after that final "Father cause all to shout your name". Enjoyed it.
Walk The World - This is starting to surpass Marvelous Light in popularity, in my opinion - and rightfully so. Great song, and a great lead-in to....
Marvelous Light - Well, what a surprise song. Didn't see that one coming as the closer ;-)
Everyone in my group agreed....it was the best Charlie Hall Band show we'd ever seen. From top to bottom, it was absolutely brilliant. Always nice getting the chance to chat with you guys briefly. Still need to get you guys out for a cup of coffee sometime. We'll see....
Oh, and Brian...expect an email regarding the merch booth later on today. I'll be needing to collect royalties, and just need to get all of my ducks in a row ;-)
