    Re: Operation Christmas Child

Oh wow.  How incredible.  When my friend wewnt two years ago, he did something similar.  He stuffed every extra inch of space in his guitar case with candy for the kids.

I'd love to be able to spend $100 dollars on a box, and still be able to do as many as I do.  But I try to keep it at $40 max (including shipping.) per box, which I admit, I struggle with.  Haha.  But I remind myself, "You know, if you weren't so extravagent, you'd be able to do more."  My sister took me shopping this weekend... lots of Valentine stuffed animals, pencils, toy jewelry, etc on sale.  Made me very happy.

    Aaaawww.

I usually don't spend too much on a shoebox because I know where to find adorable stuff when it's on clearance. And I get really lucky sometimes, too. But this year I haven't found any really cute Valentine's Day stuff. I think lots of people beat me to it.

Clearance is good.  Last fall, the Dollar Tree near my house had t-shirts!  For a dollar!  I bought atleast 4.  They only came in navy blue, all size medium, but hey, for a dollar, you take what you can get.

    Sweet!

Once after Valentine's Day, I got bags of suckers for...14 cents, I think. Anohter time after Halloween, I got bags of candy for like 24 cents each. YES!

And probably the best...you know the dollar section that they have at Target? Well...once they had everything 75% off...so I got loads and LOADS of awesome stuff for only a quarter! It was amazing. =D

Oooh, that's great.  I love buying halloween candy after halloween, but I don't think I've ever seen any that cheap.

There's a local shoe store here that asks people who buy their shoes if they would like to leave their box to donate to OCC.  We pick them up and take them to our church for people to use.  I love it, because I get to go through and pick all the boxes I want first.  In this group, there were several with my name on them!  Literally!  Apparentally, Nicole is a shoe brand.  So I picked all of those.

    Aww...cute!

There's a lady at our church who works at Payless, so she always saves the shoeboxes for our church. It's too bad that people come in with HUGE boot boxes, though. Once when I was filling up a carton, I could only fit 4 boxes inside. =[ Not the usual 12-14.

    Re: Operation Christmas Child

Yeah, boot boxes do kind of mess everything up.  In our last group of boxes from the store, there were some of those also.  I was really tempted to fill them (think of all the stuff you could fit!)  But then I decided that I better not... After all, I know first hand how hard it is fit a lot of boxes into a carton.

    Re: Operation Christmas Child

When we had an O.C.C. story sharing night at our church, the head lady explained to us how much money Samaritan's Purse saves if people use standard size shoeboxes instead of HUGE ones. I fogot exactly how much it was...but the amount was incredible and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I believe it was somewhere in the thousands per cargo ship...? Eh, not sure. But it was a LOT.

    Re: Operation Christmas Child

Wow!  I do send extra shipping when I send larger boxes, but I had no idea it was that much.  Now I definitely won't send it.

    Re: Operation Christmas Child

Yeah. It's mostly those gigantic plastic containers that take up so much space in the cartons. But still...it's kinda sad to see a little kid receiving a box as big as they are, and then ther kid next to them gets one that's super small.

    Re: Operation Christmas Child

Yeah... I'd thought of that.  I mean, I think most of these kids are aboslutely ecstatic about ANY gift, but it'd still be a little dissapointing to get something small when your buddy got a huge box.
