    FW: E-mail, Devotions and Stories

Alright, it is time to re-construct this thread.  This thread can act as a good place to post stories, devotions and other tid-bits of interesting stuff.  I get e-mails all the time that I forward to people.  So if there is a good one that you know of, this would be a great place to share it with everyone.  I have saved many of the posts from the old boards and in time I will try to re-post some of my favorites over here on the once-again new boards.  Here is a post that I recently found that I really liked:

    THE LION AND THE LAMB

    By Leslie Nease

In Genesis He’s called the Lion
    In Revelation He’s the Lamb
There seems to be a contrast
In defining the Great I Am

A lamb, it is so gentle
It was used in Bible days
    As sacrifices for our sins
    And all our wicked ways

    A lion is so ferocious
And leads its pack with pride
And if I were to see one coming
    I’d certainly run and hide!

So how can He be both -
So gentle and yet so strong?
How can He be both of them?
Could one of them be wrong?

    The answer is so easy
    It doesn’t take a detective.
In order to define our Lord,
    It takes a new perspective!

For if we are His children
    Saved by His grace alone
We call on Him, the Lamb of God,
Who sits on the Heavenly Throne

But if we don’t belong to Him
If we turn to sin and strife
He’ll be to us the Lion
And he’ll judge our sinful life

    For God is very loving
    And so wonderful to know!
    But He’s also very just
And wants us all to know…

    That sin is not acceptable
    In His precious sight
    He cannot look upon it
    His wrath it does ignite!

So come to know the Savior
He’s the Lion and the Lamb
To you, He wants to be the latter
But for justice He will stand

He wants to be your Lamb
    The ultimate sacrifice
God gave Him up for YOU
    To offer you eternal life!

    Genesis 49:9; Revelation 14:4; John 1:29

Saddle up your horses we've got a trail to blaze
Through the wild blue yonder of God's amazing grace
Let's follow our leader into the glorious unknown
This is a life like no other... this is The Great Adventure!!!!

This is the only moment we can do anything about...

Re: FW: E-mail, Devotions and Stories

    Questioning God
    April 18, 2006

"Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to Him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?" (Romans 9:20).

Whenever one begins a question with "Why?" he should realize that the answer must necessarily be theological, not scientific. Science can deal with the questions of "what" and "how," sometimes even with "where" and "when," but never with "why!" The "why" questions have to do with motives and purposes, even when dealing with natural phenomena ("Why does the earth rotate on its axis?" "Why do we have mosquitoes?"). Even though we can partially explain such things by secondary causes, we finally encounter a "first cause," and then the "why?" can be answered only by God.

The wise thing to do is simply to believe that He has good reasons for everything, whether we can discern them now or not. "Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?" (Genesis 18:25). God the Creator "worketh all things after the counsel of His own will" (Ephesians 1:11), and it is our high privilege simply to trust Him, not to question Him.

On the other hand, He often asks us: "Why?" "Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?" Jesus asked His disciples when they thought they were in great peril (Matthew 8:26). "If I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?" (John 8:46) He would say to those who question His Word.

Then to those who doubt His deity, the apostle Paul speaking in His name, asks: "Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?" (Acts 26:8). As the popular chorus goes: "God specializes in things thought impossible!" Our God is omniscient and knows what's best; He is omnipotent, so He can do it. He is all-loving and will surely do what's best for those who trust Him. HMM

Re: FW: E-mail, Devotions and Stories

Sorry, I had to post two. A friend sent this over last Saturday. (I think.)

    Warning: It is long!

There was a certain Professor of Religion named Dr Christiansen, a studious man who taught at a small college in the western United States.

Dr. Christiansen taught the required survey course in Christianity at this particular institution. Every student was required to take this course his or her freshman year, regardless of his or her major.

Although Dr Christiansen tried hard to communicate the essence of the gospel in his class, he found that most of his students looked upon the course as nothing but required
drudgery. Despite his best efforts, most students refused to take Christianity seriously.

This year, Dr. Christiansen had a special student named Steve. Steve was only a freshman, but was studying with the intent of going onto seminary for the ministry. Steve was popular, he was well liked, and he was an imposing physical specimen. He was now the starting center on the school football team, and was the best student in the professor's class.

One day, Dr. Christiansen asked Steve to stay after class so he could talk with him.

"How many push-ups can you do?"

Steve said, "I do about 200 every night."

"200? That's pretty good, Steve," Dr. Christiansen said. "Do you think you could do 300?"

    Steve replied, "I don't know .... I've never done 300 at a time."

"Do you think you could?" again asked Dr. Christiansen.

"Well, I can try," said Steve.

"Can you do 300 in sets of 10? I have a class project in mind and I need you to do about 300 push-ups in sets of ten for this to work. Can you do it? I need you to tell me you can do it," said the professor.

Steve said, "Well... I think I can...yeah, I can do it"

Dr. Christiansen said, "Good! I need you to do this on Friday. Let me explain what I have in mind."

Friday came and Steve got to class early and sat in the front of the room. When class started, the professor pulled out a big box of donuts. No, these weren't the normal kinds
of donuts, they were the extra fancy BIG kind, with cream centers and frosting swirls. Everyone was pretty excited it was Friday, the last class of the day, and they were going
to get an early start on the weekend with a party in Dr. Christiansen's class.

Dr. Christiansen went to the first girl in the first row and asked, "Cynthia, do you want to have one of these donuts?"

    Cynthia said, "Yes."

Dr. Christiansen then turned to Steve and asked, "Steve, would you do ten push-ups so that Cynthia can have a donut?"

"Sure." Steve jumped down from his desk to do a quick ten. Then Steve again sat in his desk. Dr. Christiansen put a donut on Cynthia's desk.

Dr. Christiansen then went to Joe, the next person, and asked, "Joe, do you want a donut?"

Joe said, "Yes." Dr. Christiansen asked, "Steve would you do ten push-ups so Joe can have a donut?"

Steve did ten push-ups, Joe got a donut. And so it went, down the first aisle, Steve did ten pushups for every person before they got their donut.

Walking down the second aisle, Dr. Christiansen came to Scott. Scott was on the basketball team, and in as good condition as Steve. He was very popular and never lacking
    for female companionship.

When the professor asked, "Scott do you want a donut?"

Scott's reply was, "Well, can I do my own pushups?"

Dr. Christiansen said, "No, Steve has to do them! "

Then Scott said, "Well, I don't want one then."

Dr. Christiansen shrugged and then turned to Steve and asked, "Steve, would you do ten pushups so Scott can have a donut he doesn't want?"

With perfect obedience Steve started to do ten pushups.

Scott said, "HEY! I said I didn't want one!"

Dr. Christiansen said, "Look, this is my classroom, my class, my desks, and these are my donuts. Just leave it on the desk if you don't want it." And he put a donut on Scott's desk.

Now by this time, Steve had begun to slow down a little. He just stayed on the floor between sets because it took too much effort to be getting up and down. You could start to see a little perspiration coming out around his brow.

Dr. Christiansen started down the third row. Now the students were beginning to get a little angry. Dr. Christiansen asked Jenny, "Jenny, do you want a donut?"

    Sternly, Jenny said, "No."

Then Dr. Christiansen asked Steve, "Steve, would you do ten more push-ups so Jenny can have a donut that she doesn't want?"

Steve did ten....Jenny got a donut.

By now, a growing sense of uneasiness filled the room. The students were beginning to say "No" and there were all these uneaten donuts on the desks.

Steve also had to really put forth a lot of extra effort to get these pushups done for each donut. There began to be a small pool of sweat on the floor beneath his face, his arms and brow were beginning to get red because of the physical effort involved.

Dr. Christiansen asked Robert, who was the most vocal unbeliever in the class, to watch Steve do each push up to make sure he did the full ten pushups in a set because he
couldn't bear to watch all of Steve's work for all of those uneaten donuts. He sent Robert over to where Steve was so Robert could count the set and watch Steve closely.

Dr. Christiansen started down the fourth row. During his class, however, some students from other classes had wandered in and sat down on the steps along the radiators that ran down the sides of the room. When the professor realized this, he did a quick count and saw that now there were 34 students in the room. He started to worry if Steve would be able to make it.

Dr. Christiansen went on to the next person and the next and the next. Near the end of that row, Steve was really having a rough time. He was taking a lot more time to complete
    each set.

Steve asked Dr Christiansen, "Do I have to make my nose touch on each one?"

Dr. Christiansen thought for a moment, "Well, they're your pushups. You are in charge now. You can do them any way that you want." And Dr. Christiansen went on.

A few moments later, Jason, a recent transfer student, came to the room and was about to come in when all the students yelled in one voice, "NO! Don't come in! Stay out!"

Jason didn't know what was going on. Steve picked up his head and said, "No, let him come."

Professor Christiansen said, "You realize that if Jason comes in you will have to do ten pushups for him?"

Steve said, "Yes, let him come in. Give him a donut"

Dr. Christiansen said, "Okay, Steve, I'll let you get Jason's out of the way right now. Jason, do you want a donut?"

Jason, new to the room, hardly knew what was going on. "Yes ," he said, "give me a donut."

"Steve, will you do ten push-ups so that Jason can have a donut?"

Steve did ten pushups very slowly and with great effort. Jason, bewildered, was handed a donut and sat down.

Dr. Christiansen finished the fourth row, and then started on those visitors seated by the heaters. Steve's arms were now shaking with each push-up in a struggle to lift himself
against the force of gravity. By this time sweat was profusely dropping off of his face, there was no sound except his heavy breathing; there was not a dry eye in the room.

The very last two students in the room were two young women, both cheerleaders, and very popular. Dr. Christiansen went to Linda, the second to last, and asked, "Linda, do you

    want a doughnut?"

Linda said, very sadly, "No, thank you."

Professor Christiansen quietly asked, "Steve, would you do ten push-ups so that Linda can have a donut she doesn't want?"

Grunting from the effort, Steve did ten very slow pushups for Linda.

Then Dr Christiansen turned to the last girl, Susan. "Susan, do you want a donut?"

Susan, with tears flowing down her face, began to cry. "Dr. Christiansen, why can't I help him?"

Dr. Christiansen, with tears of his own, said, "No, Steve has to do it alone, I have given him this task and he is in charge of seeing that everyone has an opportunity for a donut whether they want it or not. When I decided to have a party this last day of class, I looked at my grade book. Steve here is the only student with a perfect grade. Everyone else has failed a test, skipped class, or offered me inferior work. Steve told me that in football practice,
when a player messes up he must do push-ups. I told Steve that none of you could come to my party unless he paid the price by doing your push ups. He and I made a deal for your sakes."

"Steve, would you do ten push-ups so Susan can have a donut?"

As Steve very slowly finished his last pushup, with the understanding that he had accomplished all that was required of him, having done 350 pushups, his arms buckled
beneath him and he fell to the floor.

Dr. Christiansen turned to the room and said, "And so it was, that our Savior, Jesus Christ, on the cross, plead to the Father, 'into thy hands I commend my spirit.' With the understanding that He had done everything that was required of Him, He yielded up His life. And like some of those in this room, many of us leave the gift on the desk, uneaten."

Two students helped Steve up off the floor and to a seat, physically exhausted, but wearing a thin smile.

"Well done, good and faithful servant," said the professor, adding "Not all sermons are preached in words."

Turning to his class, the professor said, "My wish is that you might understand and fully comprehend all the riches of grace and mercy that have been given to you through the
sacrifice of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He spared not only His Begotten Son, but gave Him up for us all, for the whole Church, now and forever. Whether or not we choose to accept His gift to us, the price has been paid."

"Wouldn't you be foolish and ungrateful to leave it lying on the desk?"

    True Joy

A person who has mastered the quality of serenity and has true
peace of mind, will feel inner peace and intense joy when going through any
life-test. He does not even label the situation 'a test.' Rather, he calls
    it 'living.'

He utilizes all of his strength and power in any difficult situation. His
trust in the Almighty is manifest on a practical level, and this is the goal
    of his life.

Even though the life-test might persist for a long time (or new ones may
arise), he still does not perceive the situation as a burden or misfortune.
On the contrary, in such situations his spirit of life becomes aroused
because he derives pleasure from being able to rise above his instincts. He
does not allow himself to be defeated by anger or despair, and there is no
greater pleasure in life than this.

Holy Father, love me still. I have fallen from Your will.
I am broken: Hear my humble cry. My cry.
Take my life and make it Yours, Lord. Fill me with Your love! You are all I need. I surrender all of me.
I have wandered for so long, tired and weary on my own. In Your arms I know I'm home, O God. My God.
Take my life and make it Yours, Lord. Fill me with Your love! You are all I need. I surrender, I surrender I surrender all of me.

    Our Rock of Salvation
    April 24, 2006

"He is the Rock, His work is perfect: for all His ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is He" (Deuteronomy 32:4).

Here in the song of Moses, which God instructed him to write for the children of Israel as they were about to enter the Promised Land (note Deuteronomy 31:19), is the first of at least 40 references in the Bible to God as the Rock. There are four others just in this song. In verse 15, He is the "Rock of [Israel's] salvation." In verse 18, He is "the Rock that begat thee." See also verses 30 and 31.

Note some of the other wonderful metaphors picturing God as our great foundation stone. He is "my strong rock" in Psalm 31:2, and "the rock that is higher than I" in Psalm 61:2. In Psalm 62:7, He is "the rock of my strength" and "the rock of my refuge" in Psalm 94:22. The prophet Isaiah calls Him "a great rock in a weary land" and "the rock whence ye are hewn" (Isaiah 32:2; 51:1).

During the wilderness wanderings, the Israelites were supplied continually with water from the rock, and the apostle Paul tells us "that spiritual Rock that followed them . . . was Christ" (I Corinthians 10:4). And, of course, Christ told His disciples that Peter's confession of Himself as the "Son of the living God" was the Rock upon which He would build His church (Matthew 16:16,18).

But to unbelievers He is "The stone which the builders rejected" (Matthew 21:42), "a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense, even to them which stumble at the word" (I Peter 2:8). "Therefore," said Jesus, "whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock" (Matthew 7:24-25). Jeremiah and Inspiration
    April 19, 2006

"Then I said, I will not make mention of Him, nor speak any more in His name. But His word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay" (Jeremiah 20:9).

Contained within the books of the Old Testament are nearly three thousand claims to its precise trustworthiness. Over and over again, the various authors claim to be communicating the very words of God.

A number of such claims were recorded by Jeremiah in his book. As we see in our text, Jeremiah was somewhat discouraged with the lack of response to his ministry. But, just as he decided to refrain from passing on God's Word to the people, he felt an inner burning, recognizing that these words were much too important to ignore. These words had come from God Himself!

On other occasions, he heard the words of God directly, and was commanded to pass them on with precision. "Thus saith the Lord; Stand in the court of the Lord's house, and speak unto all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the Lord's house, all the words that I command thee to speak unto them; diminish not [literally `to shave,' or `to lessen in effect'] a word" (Jeremiah 26:2). This straightforward teaching of verbal inspiration is applied to the written accounts, as well: "The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, Thus speaketh the Lord God of Israel, saying, Write thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee in a book" (Jeremiah 30:1-2).

This book, which throughout contains such strong condemnation of falsehood, and which was written over a period of more than two thousand years by numerous authors, yet, without any contradiction between these writers, surely is the Word of the eternal, Holy God. It is the information our Creator knows we need. JDM

    Stand Ye Still
    May 1, 2006

"Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you, O Judah and Jerusalem . . . to morrow go out against them: for the Lord will be with you" (II Chronicles 20:17).

The Ammorites and Moabites and Edomites had organized "a great multitude" seeking to destroy Judah under King Jehoshaphat. But the king and his people came together to "seek the Lord" in prayer for deliverance, and God answered. "The Spirit of the Lord" spoke through Jahaziel, assuring them that "the battle is not yours, but God's" (see II Chronicles 20:2,4,14,15).

Then the Lord sent what may have seemed a strange instruction. "Stand still," He said. Just watch God do it! And He did. All their enemies were constrained by the Lord to fight and destroy each other, without the Israelites having to fight at all. Similarly, at the Red Sea when everything looked hopeless, "Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord" (Exodus 14:13). So they did, and all Pharaoh's armies were overthrown in the midst of the sea.

In Isaiah's day, when Israel was tempted to call on pagan Egypt for help against pagan Assyria, God said concerning Israel's armies, "Their strength is to sit still" (Isaiah 30:7). As the ship was being buffeted in the storm, and the sailors in panic were about to flee in the lifeboat, Paul said: "Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved" (Acts 27:31). So they stayed, and God spared every man.

There are times for action, of course, but the principle is this. When we have done all we can, and the situation seems hopeless, this is the time to sit still and trust God to work it out in His own good way. "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). Got any rivers you think are uncrossable? God specializes in things thought impossible! HMM

    Our Guide Unto Death
    May 6, 2006

"For this God is our God for ever and ever: He will be our guide even unto death" (Psalm 48:14).

No true believer has been left alone to wander aimlessly through his Christian life without guidance. We have a Guide and we have a map. The Guide is the Holy Spirit and the map is the Word of God. "Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth. . . . for He shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you" (John 16:13-14).

This assures us of being led in the right path. "I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye" (Psalm 32:8). God's eyes are far better to depend on than our own eyes. Our Lord even warned us about avoiding those whom He called, "blind guides" (Matthew 23:16), "And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch" (Matthew 15:14).

God's guidance can also be depended upon when facing extreme difficulty and hardships. "And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought . . . thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water" (Isaiah 58:11). "Thus the Lord saved Hezekiah . . . from the hand of Sennacherib . . . and from the hand of all other, and guided them on every side" (II Chronicles 32:22).

David, the sweet psalmist of Israel, pleaded with God on many an occasion for guidance, but with a great desire that his requests would come from pure motives and not selfish desires. "For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me" (Psalm 31:3). He wanted God to be glorified when the deliverance came.

Since God is for ever and ever, we can be assured of His guidance, not only throughout life, unto death, but on into eternity, and forevermore! NPS

I thought that the quotation on the side was noteworthy as well.

     Weekly News

Q: Since fish weren’t taken aboard the Ark, how did they survive the catastrophic events of Noah’s Flood?

A: Well, most fish didn’t survive such a cataclysm. If you could have been diving in the oceans before the Flood, and then again after the Flood, you probably would have said something like, “What happened? Where’s everything gone?” That’s because most marine species were killed during the Flood. However, there still were lots of fish that didn’t become extinct, because we see their descendents in the oceans today.

    Noncreationist quote of the week

“With all of the contradictions in the Christian scriptures, many people currently cannot rationally accept Christianity the way it has been practiced in the past. Great numbers of people are beginning to doubt the existence of God, in the established Christian sense of the word. So, they have taken to calling themselves ‘Christian Atheist’?”

“If prominent leaders of the Christian faith are rejecting the past interpretation of God, how then can their followers be expected to adhere to previous religious tradition?”

    – Anton Szandor LaVey, The Satanic Bible, p. 43.

This leads to a related question, “How did freshwater fish survive in the saltwater oceans?” There are a number of possibilities.

First, there are many areas in the world today where we see freshwater and saltwater together, but the two waters aren’t mixed. So it’s possible that certain organisms could have survived in pockets of fresh or saltwater.

Secondly, because of natural selection, today’s organisms have become very specialized. Yet even despite this specialization, many of today’s species of fish are able to adjust to both freshwater and saltwater. This suggests that the ability to tolerate large changes in salinity was present in many fish at the time of the Flood.

You can definitely find logical answers when you start with Genesis and use real science!

For more details on this topic, read the complete answer in How did freshwater and saltwater fish survive the Flood?.

Well! That quotation was suppoed to be on the side, but it found its way on top of the text.

Oh, well! The link at the bottom to the full answer does work.

Re: FW: E-mail, Devotions and Stories

And actually I intended that post for another thread and got confused and clikced on the wrong one. Tongue Tied [:S] Oh, well.

This one I do intend for this thread. May you be encouraged.

    The Righteous Judge
    May 8, 2006

"That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?" (Genesis 18:25).

People often make erroneous judgments. Even those who are officially appointed or elected to judge others are sometimes mistaken, and so we have a whole system of appeals courts. Yet even the Supreme Court, composed as it is of fallible human beings, often seems to be wrong. But, as Abraham recognized long ago while interceding for the people in Sodom, we can be confident that the Judge of all the earth will do right!

He not only can judge our actions in relation to His revealed will but can also discern thoughts and motives and, therefore, "judge the secrets of men" (Romans 2:16), and He will do so in absolute rightness. Furthermore, "He will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom He hath ordained; whereof He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from the dead" (Acts 17:31). "The Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: . . . and my judgment is just," asserted the Lord Jesus (John 5:22,30). To those who reject or ignore His redeeming love, relying instead on their own worth, "there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries" (Hebrews 10:26-27).

To those who have been redeemed through saving faith in Christ, there will, indeed, be a Judgment Day, but it will be for dispensing of rewards for faithful service rather than for salvation, and this also will be done righteously. "Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day" (II Timothy 4:8). HMM
